Scott Storch Reunites With Dr. Dre, Hits At New Music Coming Out

July 05, 2016

Following years of drug addiction, bankruptcies and failed returns to music, things appear to be looking up for former super-producer Scott Storch. A recent Instagram post from industry veteran Steve Lobel shows Storch, following a meeting, with none other than Dr. Dre:

"It's a big day in hip hop earlier today," the music mogul writes for the caption. "Reunited and it feels so good#drdre X #scottstorch what a great meeting ! Stay tuned history repeats it self#weworking"

Storch shared the same picture to his own Instagram, and he shared that the experience was "one of the best days." He ended the caption by writing, "HISTORY ON REPEAT IN A POSITIVE WAY."

Once again, Storch is ready to be considered among the game's elites, and he's now earned his way back into the good graces of the man with whom he earned his first big hit, 1999's "Still D.R.E." After remaining close friends for many years after their 4x platinum single, Storch's drug problems eventually wrecked his relationship with Dr. Dre, as he has readily admitted in past interviews.

"I think most—I regret the way I treated Dr. Dre after he so graciously opened up the doors for this kingdom to me," Storch told HipHopWired last year. "And I know the mistakes I made were 100 percent drug-induced and I just feel like that relationship isn’t over. And I hope to work with him in the future. Hopefully, he can accept me back into his good graces."

After all, we still believe Storch is capable of delivering the same outstanding instrumentals he did a decade ago. Let's see whether he will prove us right or wrong.

DJ Khaled Reveals "Major Key" Album Cover Complete With Lion

June 24, 2016

Remember that photo shoot DJ Khaled had with a lion?

Well, the official album cover for Major Key is here and yes, the lion made the cut.

DJ Khaled revealed the cover art on his Instagram. The photo was shot by legendary photographer Jonathan Mannion, who is responsible for the iconic covers of DMX's Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood and The Game's The Documentary.

Major Key is set to include a song with Jay Z and Future. It is supposedly going to be the song of the summer, according to the Atlanta rapper. The squad filmed the video for "I Got The Keys" with a long list of superstar cameos including T.I., 2 Chainz, Swizz Beatz and Rick Ross. In his Instagram post for the album cover, Khaled promises the video "very very soon" and says he will announce the release date for his ninth LP, his first with Epic Records, on the same day.

Rae Sremmurd’s ‘SremmLife 2′ Gets New Release Date

June 17, 2016

Rae Sremmurd fans have to wait a little bit longer to hear SremmLife 2. The Mississippi duo’s much anticipated album has been pushed back as Aug. 12 will serve as the new release date. The LP was originally scheduled to drop June 24.

Obviously this will disappoint many listeners who were expecting to get the album next week, but it is best that Rae Sremmurd gets everything squared away before putting the final product out there. Slimm Jxmmi and Swae Lee made a huge splash last year with their debut album SremmLife which was led by the singles “No Flex Zone” and “No Type.” The youthful duo’s unbridled energy paired with the direction of producer and Ear Drummer Records boss Mike WiLL Made-It helped bring the album plenty of critical acclaim.

Rae Sremmurd will look to recapture the magic of their debut with SremmLife 2. This time around, Slim Jxmmi and Swae Lee have enlisted some heavy hitters like Juicy J and Da Honorable C.N.O.T.E. for beats. Mike WiLL Made-It will be major factor on the upcoming LP once again with multiple production credits. You can check out the official tracklist for the deluxe edition of SremmLife 2 below and pre-order now on iTunes.

1. “Start a Party”
2. “Real Chill” Feat. Kodak Black
3. “By Chance”
4. “Look Alive”
5. “Set the Roof” Feat. Lil Jon
6. “Shake It Fast” Feat. Juicy J
7. “Take It or Leave It”
8. “Came a Long Way”
9. “Now That I Know”
10. “Patti Cake”
11. “Just Like Us”
12. “Over Here” Feat. Bobo Swae
13. “Swang”
14. “662” Feat. Imxcd and Riff 3x

June 16th Officially "Tupac Shakur Day" in Oakland

June 16, 2016

Today is Tupac's birthday; the late legend would have been 45 years old. If you believe that June 16th should be a holiday, now it is; the City of Oakland has named June 16th "Tupac Shakur Day."

Hip-hop fan LeRoy McCarthy, who was also behind the scheme to rename a corner in Brooklyn after the Notorious B.I.G. and the bid to rename NYC’s Paul’s Boutiquestreet “Beastie Boys Square,” helped draft the language of the legal document, which describes Tupac as one of the most “thought provoking hip-hop MCs.”

“Although Tupac was born in Harlem, New York City in 1971 and later lived in Baltimore, Maryland, and in Marin City, California, he cherished his time in Oakland as his home, stating that he got his ‘Game’ from Oakland,” reads the proclamation. Tupac began his career with the Oakland-based rap crew Digital Underground. “Hisbirth date serves to remind us of his contributions to our communities through the celebration of art and culture as an awakening tool towards changes in society.”

Happy Tupac Shakur Day y'all!

Kanye West adds more dates to Saint Pablo tour

June 15, 2016

UPDATE: Kanye West added five more tour dates on Wednesday, just one day after announcing the Saint Pablo tour, which will support his February album The Life of Pablo.

The new schedule includes second dates in Toronto, Miami, and Oakland, a third date in Los Angeles, and one date in Grand Rapids, Michigan. See a full updated list of tour dates below.

EARLIER: The chance to see Kanye West perform The Life of Pablolive has arrived. West announced the Saint Pablo tour Tuesday together with Live Nation and Tidal. The shows will kick off Aug. 25 in Indianapolis, Indiana before making 40 stops in North America.

He’ll play two nights at New York’s Madison Square Garden, two nights at Los Angeles’ The Forum, and two nights in his hometown Chicago.

Just after West released The Life of Pablo, an industry insider told EW that West had plans to tour with the album. “There are serious talks of a tour,” and industry source told EW. “Of course there’s demand. He definitely sells tickets.”

He then began teasing a tour in May when he told Steve Harvey that he would tour this fall. “We’re going to go out in September,” he said on Harvey’s radio show. “We’re just working on some ideas right now. My tour game is strong. My tour game is unprecedented. … I’m trying to literally inspire these kids the way Disney inspired me when I first saw the original Star Wars.”

West had been scheduled to give his first major post-Pabloperformance on June 5 as part of New York’s Governors Ball. But his set was canceled due to “severe weather.” He then scheduled a surprise show at the city’s Webster Hall. But after thousands of people showed up and waited in the streets, the venue announced he would not perform.

Tickets go on sale Friday, June 18 via LiveNation.com. American Express cardholders will have access to a presale on Tuesday, June 14, and Tidal members will have access to a presale on Thursday, June 16.

Danny Brown Is Working With TDE’s Engineer Ali to Finish His New Album

June 10, 2016

In March, Nick Catchdubs revealed that Danny Brown was done recording his new album. Today (June 10), the Fool’s Gold rapper took to Instagram and posted a photo of himself alongside Top Dog Entertainment’s engineer, Derek “MixedByAli” Ali. The caption states that the two are putting the finishing touches on Brown’s upcoming still-untitled album. View the photo above.

There is still no release date for the highly anticipated follow-up to 2013’s Old. The caption of the Instagram photo reads, “Me and the bruh bruh @mixedbyali putting the final touches on my next masterpiece #Bruisers get ready Stanny Crown season approaching.”

It’s been a long time coming for Danny Brown’s new album. The toothless, frohawk-bearing artist took a break from the recording process in April 2015 to pursue other endeavors. “I took a break from it cause I’m so ahead of schedule with it knowing it ain’t coming out no time soon”” he announced via Twitter. He devoted some of that extra time to writing a children’s book to empower young black girls. Brown’s 13-year-old daughter inspired the project.

If you want to hear some recent music from Brown, check out his verse on Avalanches’ new single, “Frank Sinatra.” Also, be sure to peep his collaboration with Westside Gunn called, “Bodies on Fairfax” and listen to his verse on the “Hella Hoes” Remix alongside A$AP Mob and Aston Matthews.

The Notorious B.I.G. Is Getting a Memorial Statue in Brooklyn

June 10, 2016

The Hip Hop Hall of Fame Museum is planning to immortalize The Notorious B.I.G. with a statue in Brooklyn. The organizers of the Biggie Memorial Project are currently looking to raise $35,000 in an effort to do so. The statue will be placed in the Putnam Triangle Plaza in Clinton Hill near the rapper’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood.

A six-foot tall sculpture of the Notorious B.I.G.’s face has already been sculpted by Brooklyn-based artist Tanda Francis. The sculpture was originally on exhibit at the 210 Gallery in New York but the display ended. The Hip Hop Hall of Fame Museum now intends to bronze the statue and move it to a permanent location.

Go Fund Me page has been launched for the Biggie Memorial Project in an effort to cover the costs. The fundraising page says the $35,000 will go towards the design, bronzing, expenses involved in getting approval from the city, mounting, compensation for the artists and a donation to the Christopher Wallace Foundation.

“This cultural arts attraction will surely be a tourist and economic draw as fans and tourists from around the world come to visit the #BIGGIEMEMORIAL,” stated Chairman JT Thompson, creator of the HHHOF Awards and Museum Project.

It appears to be a perfect time for the Biggie Memorial Project to launch as the nostalgia for Bad Boy Records is currently at an all-time high. The recent reunion shows for the label were a huge success. That should only continue to grow as Diddy and more will embark on a nationwide tour in August.

Lil Yachty Officially Signs to Quality Control

June 10, 2016

Lil Yachty is officially signed. Quality Control COO Kevin “Coach K” Lee posted a picture of himself alongside CEO Pierre “Pee” Thomas and Lil Yachty with a caption welcoming the Atlanta rapper to the label. Lil Boat also went on Twitter to confirm the news.

“I am where I want to be, QC The Label,” Lil Yachty wrote. “It’s Official.”

Lil Yachty also showed some appreciation for his fans with a thankful message. He told them that signing to Quality Control was only the beginning of his journey.

“I just want to thank all my fans.. For being there for me,” Lil Yachty wrote. “This is literally only the beginning. Big Things Coming Soon. Summer Songs 2 Otw.”

Perhaps the guidance of Coach K and Pee can help Lil Yachty build more of dedicated fan base in his own city. During a recent appearance on Hot 97’s Ebro in the Morning, Lil Boat said that he did not feel like he has any fans in Atlanta despite it being his hometown.

“For some reason I still feel like I don’t have any fans in Atlanta,” he says. “Of course they’re there, they’re not as loving [as other places].”

Lil Yachty should be in good hands as Quality Control has overseen the careers of Migos, OG Maco, Young Greatness and many more. With the QC team behind him, the rapper will now focus on getting his Summers Song 2 tape ready along with the many collaboration projects he’s got in the works.

Kodak Black Plays Off Biggie’s ‘Ready to Die’ for ‘Lil Big Pac’ Mixtape Cover

June 10, 2016

Kodak Black is still locked up after getting arrested (again) two weeks ago on armed robbery and false imprisonment charges from 2015. All systems are still a go for the release of his mixtape Lil B.I.G. Pac on June 11th, Kodak's 19th birthday. Earliertoday, his team shared the mixtape artwork on his Instagram.

The mixtape imagery plays off the artwork from Notorious B.I.G’s iconic album, Ready to Die, in which a baby Biggie sits in diapers against a white backdrop. In Kodak’s version of the artwork, his head appears on a toddler’s body. But that’s not all. Kodak, who hails from Pompano Beach, Fla., and proudly flaunts his Haitian ancestry, has a Haitian flag tied around his head in Tupac Shakur fashion.

If Kodak’s latest cover art shocks you, it really shouldn’t. Back in April of this year, Kodak tweeted that he was “Better Than Pac & Biggie,” which naturally rubbed some rap fans the wrong way. Lil B.I.G. Pac drops on June 11, the same day young Kodak celebrates his 19th birthday. What do you think of the mixtape artwork?

Check Out Adult Swim's 2016 Lineup

May 27, 2016

Say this for Adult Swim: They know their audience. The cable network has made a very comfortable niche for itself showing weird, funny, random, ridiculous things to people who are awake in the middle of the night, and they've leaned hard into building the brand around people with weird jobs who keep odd hours. And since that's a group that definitely includes musicians, the music world and Adult Swim have made cozy bedfellows for several years now. So when it was time for the network's creative director, Jason Demarco, to start recruiting artists for the 2016 Adult Swim SinglesProgram—an ongoing annual series that's grown each year featuring original, unreleased material from artists both with and without massive platforms—it was actually a pretty un-daunting task.

This year's lineup is strong: the list of artists includes Metro Boomin, Vince Staples,Rae Sremmurd, Flying Lotus, Run the Jewels (for the fourth consecutive year), Earl Sweatshirt (with KNX), Mike WiLL Made-It, Thelonius Martin [with Joey Purp], and D∆WN.

DeMarco spoke about the Singles Program with Fast Company. “I have a shockingly easy time getting to even the biggest artists, because they know our network and they know what we stand for, and they like what we do," he said. "They’re just immediately a little more receptive to us than they would be if it was like, ‘Hey, I’m a car company, and want to use your song to sell my new car.’ They know we’re not really selling anything in particular—we’re just doing this music program.”

The series will kick off May 25 and will have a new song drop every Wednesday until November. Check out the full lineup on the Image:

Troy Ave Possibly Facing An Attempted Murder Charge

May 27, 2016

There has been a big development in the shooting at Irving Plaza on Wednesday night (May 25). According to the NY Daily News, Roland Collins (Troy Ave) has been charged with “reckless endangerment, illegal weapons possession and attempted murder,” according to sources.

Earlier Thursday, the New York Police Department tweeted out footage from the venue that showed a male suspect with a bloodied leg firing a gun in the green room area backstage, where the shooting and a brawl broke out. The man was later identified by authorities as the 30-year-old MC (real name Roland Collins). Opening acts Maino and Uncle Murda were performing at the time gunshots were heard while headliner T.I. had not yet taken the stage.

NYDN also reports that the gunfire stemmed from an alleged beef between Troy Ave and Maino's camps, though the latter took to his Instagram on Thursday to share a lengthy post that detailed his personal and professional relationship with Troy Ave.

"First and foremost my deepest condolences to the family & friends of Ronald Mcphatter who was tragically killed last night. Despite having to cope with more senseless violence. I woke up to the usual FALSE and ridiculous lies being circulated by irresponsible members of the media," Maino wrote. "What transpired wasabsolutely NOT the result of MYSELF or ANYBODY IN MY CAMP , ENTOURAGE, TRAVELING PARTY or ORGANIZATION IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM. We entered the venue respectfully as always and exited in shocked like all other concertgoers."
